Clinical diagnostic tests have long been used as a means of screening, diagnosing, and monitoring disease. Two common methods used in obtaining reportable results for clinical laboratory tests are clinical chemistry and immunoassay techniques. Clinical chemistry tests are analytical human biochemistry tests. Immunoassays, on the other hand, are tests that involve an antigen-antibody reaction. Both types of tests are run using various bodily fluids. It is estimated that over 7.2 billion reportable results were produced in laboratories in the US in 2003, 5.6 billion of which used clinical chemistry and immunoassay techniques and reagents.
